After studying fine art and illustration at the prestigious academy of art Central St Martins, Dean started his career as a junior at a top London based agency producing visuals, storyboards and illustrations for a wide range of commercial clients. Eventually he began to work freelance exploring other avenues and took on a number of contracts, producing conceptual artwork for the gaming industry. Dean managed to keep at the forefront of his profession by making the transition from traditional mediums such as markers and inks and translated the draughtsman ship skills he nurtured over the years to digital packages. This enabled him to produce new looking high end artwork for clients that was exciting, innovative and highly sought after.
Dean paints on the computer in a traditional way replacing the brush with a digital pen and uses layers as an advantage to his process. Having endless colours and brushes at his fingertips enables Dean to spill his mind onto the page quickly and without fear.
Always staying true to his fine art background, Dean continues to produce art that reflects his traditional skill set. He embraces the technical challenges of anatomy and figurative art and combines this with the use of modern technology to entwine elements of realism with a twist of fantasy to produce unique pieces of art. Dean wants the viewer to read what they will into the imagery and create the beauty through subject matter, whether it is dark or light.
Dean Fox's work is a combination of old and new as a modern day man heavily inspired by the Pre Raphaelite era. Provoking emotion through art is the real magic and he's proud to be deemed by fans of his art as a ‘digital wizard’.
“I am never completely happy with my work as I try to translate my mind’s eye. To truthfully express my creativity I have to be able to lose myself and art for me becomes my meditation. I have to be able to accept failure and yet a joy is maintained that pushes through the barrier of success. The true art is to know what to reject in life, what to leave out and how to create as simply as possible, almost effortlessly. Beauty is only ever really achieved by removing not adding. This nature is entwined with discontentment which drives me in almost everything I do, pushes me to progress, breaking new boundaries and keeping me outside my comfort zone.”
Dean is currently the most in-demand graphic illustrator in the UK, with the likes of Coca-Cola, BMW, the Football Association and Sky being clients of his to name but a few.
