A note from the artist Vincent Devine:
“Jesus Christ, easily one of the most influential figures in history.
Upon researching the timeline of Art History for the Neo-Dimensionism Manifesto I began to notice patterns in the evolution of the visual arts. I noticed that upon the influx of Christianity there was a huge move away from the depiction of the human form as seen in the realistic painting of the Renaissance period. Seeking an answer to this I found a theory that in the days of early Christianity that it was unacceptable to depict a holy deity using the likeness of human beings. It was thought that Jesus, after his crucifixion, was no longer human but now otherworldly. This degradation of form was designed to move away from the physical representation in favour of capturing the essence or soul of the human subject.
Combining underlying muscle and skull structures to create abstracted shapes on the face, the title of this piece seeks to connect the viewer to the historical figure of Jesus Christ with a hint of the spiritual. The spiritual is symbolically represented with the inclusion of an extremely faint Halo or Aura. The colouration of the pink hue is deliberate to communicate the idea of flesh and that this man, above all else, was a human being, made of the same biological matter we all are. It calls to question was Jesus simply more evolved in consciousness than everyone else, and was he killed for this evolution or was he simply just a mortal man?”
Beginning his painting practice in 2008, Vincent started to paint independently while studying for his Honours Degree in Graphic Design to explore a new way of painting. Subconscious undertones have always been prevalent in his work and he continues to defy categorisation as an artist of a certain genre due to his constant fluctuation into new and exciting styles in his painting practice. His work has been lauded by huge stars such as Shakira, Will.I.Am, Alanis Morissette and J.K Rowling to name a few and he has had work commissioned by Tyra Banks, Roisin Murphy, Iggy Azalea and has had his work feature on Madonna's "Rebel Heart Tour".`
In 2018 Vincent had a sellout show of the Irish debut of his new Manifesto work to one of Ireland's most prominent collectors. This new work is an in-depth exploration into the visual implications of the subconscious mind through various exercises and visual depictions. Vincent seeks to find answers to the subconscious undertones that have always informed his work yet eludes understanding on a conscious plane. His new work will be explored under the umbrella term "Neo-Dimensionism" and seeks to visually explain the inexplicable, paint the unpaintable. He will produce this work in tandem with his hugely popular and unique "Ambigutree Series".
"I want to paint something you cannot hold in the palm of your hand or see with the naked eye" Vincent Devine.
